Joan walked into the dining room dressed in a red-hot leather mini skirt and a long-sleeved, black, skin-tight body suit. Jessy walked out a few minutes later wearing the same pants she’d had on the night before and one of Joan’s T shirts—which didn’t even come close to fitting.

Joan sat down at the table. “So what’s for breakfast this morning, Hanna?”

“Oatmeal with honey, dry wheat toast!” Hanna yelled from the kitchen in her thick Southern accent. “Herb tea.”

“Sit down, Jessy,” Joan said.

Jessy sat at the table mumbling about not liking people waiting on her.

Hanna put a bowl and plate in front of Jessy and Jessy took a spoon and started looking through the oatmeal.

Hanna watched her curiously.

“She’s looking for bugs,” Joan explained.

“You just eat. There ain’t no bugs in my food,” Hanna said hotly. She’d just had to deal with Joan’s overweight friend who complained that there were no donuts, and now Joan’s whatever she was, was digging through her food looking for bugs. Jessy didn’t stop looking, and Hanna said again. “No bugs.”

“It’s not personal,” Jessy said. Finished checking the oatmeal, she flipped the toast over.

Hanna threw her hands up. “I am working in a crazy house,” she said. “Will you be staying for lunch or are you off again?”

“We’ll be gone for a while. I’ll let you know when we’ll be back,” Joan said.

Hanna walked off mumbling. Jessy made a face at her back. When she was gone Jessy leaned over the table and whispered. “We surely to God don’t need someone to fucking cook for us.”

“I heard that,” Hanna said.

Joan laughed. “She has very good hearing, and she doesn’t just do the cooking she takes care of the house.”

Jessy picked at her food, and ate very little.

“Hung over, baby?”

“My stomach is,” Jessy said.

“Then you would be the one left the lovely mess in the flowers,” Hanna said, sweeping in to pick up the dishes.

“No doubt you have a puke remover on the payroll,” Jessy mumbled.

“I heard that, too,” Hanna said.

“Middle-aged old battle axe!” Jessy muttered.

“What did you say?” Hanna asked, sweeping into the room.

“I was just checking to see if you could still hear me,” Jessy said, shrugging.

“Are you going to be around here a lot?” Hanna asked through slitted eyes.

“Any time I’m here. But don’t worry, Hanna, we don’t plan to be here much and I’ll give you a raise,” Joan said. “Where is Katy?”

“She went off somewhere with Miss Ellen,” Hanna said. “Don’t ask me where because I don’t know. I can’t keep track of everything that goes on in this crazy house. Yesterday you go out with a man and this morning you wake up with a woman and none of that is my business. I’m just saying it’s a crazy house that’s all. I’m going home now.”

“Don’t leave on my account,” Jessy said.

“Stop,” Joan laughed, pushing Jessy on the shoulder.

“Alright tell me again why you have a cook/housekeeper on staff. You’re never home and you’re a gourmet cook. So excuse me while I just don’t get it.
